Have you ever found yourself looking forward to Friday – and not because you had something great to do at the weekend, but because you couldn’t wait for the week to end? Or perhaps you have started to dread Monday’s? The business you loved is starting to overwhelm you? Maybe you don’t know what to do next to get the joy back?
Well, sometimes you have to step outside your day to day in order to understand what you are doing, WHY you are doing it and WHAT you really love about it.
For example, this week I am in Chatham spending 7 days coaching the Elite Course. The Elite course is a 7 day public speaking course, which takes people who already do some level of public speaking to a whole new level of competence, and also teaches them how to sell from stage.
Now the reason I tell you this is because I ABSOLUTELY LOVE this. I would do this for free (and I used to years ago). If I won the lottery tomorrow would I still do this. Yes. Absolutely. And that is the same for my social media business, and my Leading Women in Business Mastermind and networking group.
When you do what you love it isn’t like work.
Having said that – even when you love what you do there are times when things can be tough. As a business owner, there isn’t always someone to talk things through with, argue with or ask for advice. And if you are having a challenging time and that stress goes on for a period of time, it can make you feel a bit lost.
If you recognised the Monday / Friday feeling – then perhaps you are feeling a bit of stress in your business. In which case – take yourself out. I know this is the exact time you think you can’t afford to, but it is also probably the exact time when you need to.
You see, whether you are a business owner or working for someone else – you do what you do for a reason. And the reason needs to be MORE than just – for the money. There is a purpose, a natural skill, a joy that comes when you are doing what you love.
Money is important, and it isn’t easy to be happy without any money, but after a certain level of basic needs are met, the important things in life are nothing to do with money.
Take some time out tomorrow – even if it is just 20 minutes – to really think about WHY you are doing what you are doing and HOW you can get to do more of the stuff you love and less of the stuff that someone else could do better, cheaper and more efficiently.
A mastermind group is a great place to take business time out and look in on your business from the outside. In a mastermind group you can put your challenges, problems or opportunities out there and get some ideas and ‘case studies’ of how things have been approached and worked or not worked for other people.
And sometimes you get asked a better question, better than you would ask yourself. Because, would you agree, that we are often too close to our own situations to be able to see the next best step. And instead, we carry on doing what we’ve always done and getting what we’ve always got.
The beauty for me of this week of teaching public speaking is that it gives me that space and time out looking in on my business. You see in order to be able to help people craft their business keynote speech, you need to be able to help them craft their business message, package it up into easily understood chunks that they can clearly communicate to others. And by helping them with that it makes you look at what YOU are doing.
So during this week, I am crafting 2 new ‘products’ – one is building on my Mastermind Group and bringing in a more structured program which will achieve several outcomes for my members. And the other – well we don’t have time to talk about that today – but watch this space!
